American presidents, politicians and lawmakers influenced and led the American Bible Society throughout its 193-year history
New York, NY,
June 18, 2009
This Independence Day, we celebrate leaders who have not only protected our freedoms, but who also worked to make the Bible accessible to every person. American presidents, politicians and lawmakers influenced and led the American Bible Society throughout its 193-year history, including:
- John Quincy Adams, 6th president of the United States
- Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th president of the United States
- Benjamin Harrison, 23rd president of the United States
- John Jay, the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court
Since its founding in 1816 under the leadership of Elias Boudinot, 4th president of the Continental Congress, the American Bible Society's mission has remained constant-to make the Bible available to every person in a language and format each can understand and afford, so all people may experience its life-changing message.
Supporting our Troops
For more than 190 years, American Bible Society has put the Scriptures in the hands of troops to be a source of hope, comfort and encouragement as they protect and defend our country:
- Distributed Bibles to the crew on the U.S.S. John Adams in 1817
- Provided Bibles to both the North and South during the Civil War
- Provided Bibles to U.S. soldiers during the Mexican War
- Distributed more than 7.4 million pieces of Bible literature during WWII
- Provided troops in the Persian Gulf with 300,000 compact Bibles with camouflage covers
- Developed pocket-sized military Bibles for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan
Dr. Lamar Vest, president and CEO of the American Bible Society is available on Wednesday, June 24 to discuss how Independence Day is intrinsically linked to the history of the Bible.
