American Bible Society Mourns the Loss of Board Member John H. Leonard

New York, NY,
October 20, 2009

The American Bible Society mourns the loss of John H. Leonard who passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his family on August 24. He was a long serving member of the ABS Board.

Mr. Leonard was 87 and suffered from cardiopulmonary difficulties. John was born in New York City, attended public schools, and graduated from New York University with both undergraduate and graduate degrees. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII. He had a long and successful career in the advertising business, especially at Doyle Dane Bernbach from where he retired as Vice President in 1987. As important to him as his business career, he committed to providing his time and talent to many organizations. He taught at NYU's Stern School of Business, served on NYU's Board of Trustees, was Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Wartburg Home in Mt. Vernon, served many years on the Board of the American Bible Society and served in many capacities from teacher to Elder at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Yonkers.

His enthusiasms were many, ranging from golf to reading to swimming to all things New York. He had a special love for Blue Mt. Lake in the Adirondack Mountains where he and his family have vacationed virtually every year since 1946. He was also known for his many durable friendships.

He is survived by a loving family including his wife of nearly 63 years, Marjorie, his son John K., his daughter, Janet O'Loughlin, his four grandchildren, Sarah and Jen Leonard and Zachary and MacKenzie O'Loughlin and his cousin, Harry T. Bahr. A memorial scholarship fund has been established at Lancaster Theological Seminary in his name. Donations may be sent to:
