“I have a dream.” These words ring out from history, from a moment that stands an as icon of America's quest for civil rights. Dr. King's now-famous speech was rooted in Scripture, as the Bible formed the basis for all of King's beliefs about equality and justice.
“...justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream,” King said, quoting Amos 5:24. “...every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low; the rough places will be made plain and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together,” King said, quoting Isaiah 40:4-5.
Advancing Justice
American Bible Society continues to advance the cause of justice, revealing the glory of the Lord as seen in Scripture where needed most. ABS launched its first city-specific Scripture initiative in Newark in 1968, at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, and those initiatives continue to this day. Through resources like Brick by Brick: Restoring the City through Prayer and God's Word, ABS works to realize the dream that all people will know they are equal in God's sight.
