advancement: National Director of Planned Giving

Job Purpose:

The National Director is a key member of American Bible Society’s Advancement Ministry leadership. This person will have the primary responsibility for developing and executing the strategy for a comprehensive planned giving program, including building and stewarding a portfolio of planned-gift prospects and donors, and effectively leading a national team of regional Planned Giving officers, as well as using direct mail and web marketing. The National Director will successfully shape and sustain a strong tradition of legacy support for American Bible Society and take the program to a more strategic and more innovative level, commensurate with the growth of American Bible Society.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Have a deep understanding of planned giving vehicles and the donors who use them, a keen appreciation for the fundamentals of direct marketing, and relate well to the planned-giving constituency.
  • Foster best practices in planned giving, first among the team and then to other teams within Advancement Ministry.
  • Work with American Bible Society’s Advancement Ministry development leadership to develop metrics to measure success and determine planned giving goals and develop a comprehensive plan to take the program to a more strategic and innovative level that is commensurate with the growth goals of American Bible Society.
  • Increase the number of planned-giving prospects and donors for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, building upon the current program using marketing tools and existing data resources.
  • Ensure stewardship of planned-giving donors through personal visits, invitation to events, mailings, e-mails, and calls, as appropriate. Update planned giving data in Blackbaud (American Bible Society’s CRM) on a regular basis.
  • Manage communication plans that employ the latest and most effective techniques to promote planned gifts.
  • Provide leadership and stewardship for the 1816 Society. Ensure that all planned-giving donors receive consistent recognition and an accounting of the impact of their gifts.
  • Work with the Advancement Ministry teams and American Bible Society’s finance and legal departments on best practices and planned-giving rules and regulations, policies and procedures, gift and donor analysis, and reporting.
  • Work collaboratively with the Managing Director of Community Giving and the Director of the Planned Giving Support Team to manage all aspects of the planned-giving program and grow the inventory of gifts made through bequests, trusts, charitable gift annuities, gift acceptance, and other planned-giving arrangements.
  • Work collaboratively with Director Lead Donors to incorporate planned gift elements in major gift efforts.

Essential Traits & Skills—

Minimum qualifications individual must possess when entering position:

  • Fervent belief in the mission of American Bible Society and its core values
  • Passion for the Bible cause and its ability to impact lives
  • Must have 8+ years of non-profit fundraising experience, with a minimum of 5 years of planned giving experience

  • Thorough knowledge of planned and life income gift opportunities, gift and estate tax regulations, and the principles of digital and print marketing campaigns
  • Skilled in the development and use of performance data and fundraising analytics as related to planned giving
  • Self-motivated and goal-oriented manager with entrepreneurial instincts, intellectual curiosity, energy, and a sense of humor
  • Collegial and collaborative team player who thrives in a fast-paced, high-performing environment
  • Superior interpersonal skills and the capacity to develop effective relationships with donors, prospects, senior American Bible Society leadership, and staff
  • Excellent communication skills; the ability to solicit and understand the mission of American Bible Society, and then interpret, translate, and communicate this information to diverse constituencies in an effective and compelling manner
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Must be able to work effectively in a consensus-style operation
  • Must be willing to work for the good of the mission of American Bible Society and work well in teams with other staff members
  • Good lateral thinker
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel
  • Proficient knowledge of donor databases


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 8+ years in a fund-raising, development environment
  • Past success working in a collaborative team environment across functional department lines

Team of regional Planned Giving Officers
