God’s Life-Giving Word of Praise and Thanksgiving
Psalm 127: The opening verses in today’s reading express dependence on God. The writer acknowledges that God is the source of all blessings. In ancient times, the gift of children provided the family with economic support and help with daily tasks.
Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a real blessing.
In Praise of God's Goodness
1If the Lord does not build the house,
the work of the builders is useless;
if the Lord does not protect the city,
it does no good for the sentries to stand guard.
2It is useless to work so hard for a living,
getting up early and going to bed late.
For the Lord provides for those he loves,
while they are asleep.
3Children are a gift from the Lord;
they are a real blessing.
4The sons a man has when he is young
are like arrows in a soldier's hand.
5Happy is the man who has many such arrows.
He will never be defeated
when he meets his enemies in the place of judgment.
Verses 1 and 2 acknowledge that human efforts are useless unless dependence on God is acknowledged. In what ways do you demonstrate your dependence on God? In what ways does your community of faith celebrate the blessing of children? For what will you thank God today?
Faithful God, you are the source of all things. I can do nothing without you. How thankful I am that you alone are God; I place my trust in you and stand on your holy word. Amen.
