Through the course of a typical week, my confidence ebbs and flows like jagged points on a graph. My boss compliments me on a project and I feel accomplished. My wife sends me an encouraging text and I feel loved. A friend meets me for lunch and I feel valued.
But without fail, something throws me off. I rush in to work late—shirt untucked, brow dripping sweat—and immediately feel self-conscious about my appearance. I share my best ideas in a brainstorming meeting, but an apathetic response leaves me feeling inadequate. I get a past-due bill in the mail, and the large red letters on the envelope make me feel useless.
Once overflowing with confidence, I now feel—at best—like an average man who lives an average life.
But here’s the good news: whether I lack confidence about my appearance, my decisions, my social status or my career path, I can always find confidence in the Lord. Through his Word, I find the strength to trade feelings of inadequacy for confidence and assurance.
If you need a confidence boost today, join me in meditating on these four Bible verses:
- Philippians 1:6 (GNTD)
And so I am sure that God, who began this good work in you, will carry it on until it is finished on the Day of Christ Jesus. - Hebrews 10:35-36 (GNTD)
Do not lose your courage, then, because it brings with it a great reward. You need to be patient, in order to do the will of God and receive what he promises. - Hebrews 4:16 (GNTD)
Let us have confidence, then, and approach God’s throne, where there is grace. There we will receive mercy and find grace to help us just when we need it. - Psalm 139:13-14 (GNTD)
You created every part of me; you put me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because you are to be feared; all you do is strange and wonderful. I know it with all my heart.
