Introduction

Psalm 123: Today’s short psalm is a communal prayer, asking God for deliverance from oppressors.

Today’s Key Verse: Psalm 123:1

LORD, I look up to you, up to heaven, where you rule.

Reading

123 Lord, I look up to you,
up to heaven, where you rule.
As a servant depends on his master,
as a maid depends on her mistress,
so we will keep looking to you, O Lord our God,
until you have mercy on us.

Be merciful to us, Lord, be merciful;
we have been treated with so much contempt.
We have been mocked too long by the rich
and scorned by proud oppressors.

Reflect

In today’s psalm, what is being asked of God? What is character of the opponent in verses 3–4? Several biblical texts encourage us to be persistent in prayer (see Luke 18:1–8; 1 Thessalonians 5:17). In what way does verse 2 reflect trust in God and suggest that the community is praying persistently? How would you describe your own prayer life?

Pray

Faithful God, keep me close to you each day as I seek the safety of your care. Teach me to pray at all times and in all circumstances. No matter the attitude of those around me, may I focus on you and find comfort in your goodness, mercy, and steadfast love. Amen.
