As the United States of America commemorates its 250th anniversary this July, many Americans will revisit the stories of our founding, the figures who shaped it, and the milestones that continue to define our nation today.
But most of these celebrations will be missing a significant piece of America’s story: Where did America’s Founders find courage and inspiration? What makes the United States different?
The Bible is arguably the most influential book in American history. The founding generations infused the new nation’s ideals and government institutions with the Bible’s principles. In times of turmoil and conflict, leaders leaned on the Bible’s wisdom to seek justice and work toward peace. And at historic turning points—both heartbreaking and hopeful—the Bible’s words are often used to frame the prayers and dreams of Americans for the future. But it’s hard to find people who can explain why the Bible has been so ingrained in our history, and why it still matters for us today.
That’s why American Bible Society has convened a group of trusted scholars to help you learn and share that story this year.
You Have Questions. Our Scholars Have Answers.
The Faith and Liberty Speakers Bureau consists of top professors, researchers, pastors, and historians who are equipped to answer your questions about America, the Bible, and how the two are deeply intertwined.
These experts are eager to connect with you and your community through formal lectures or informal talks to help you rediscover the full history of America—from the colonial period to the founding, through abolition and civil rights, and on to today.
Whether you’re hosting a conference, a club meeting, or a retreat for your team, our speakers will help you create a meaningful, memorable event by helping you consider key questions such as:
- What was the influence of the Bible and people of faith on America’s founding?
- What role has faith played in shaping and living out America’s ideals?
- What wisdom can we draw from those who built, sustained, and reformed our institutions?

Go Deeper with Our Faith and Liberty Resources
Beyond in-person events, you’re invited to visit the Faith and Liberty blog, where we’re examining the lives of key figures inspired by God’s Word, including Abigail Adams, Teddy Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass.
As our nation wrestles with the complex questions of our time, our scholars add informed perspective and historical depth. At the heart of it our work is the reminder that we have a shared history of finding wisdom and inspiration in the Bible—wisdom that is still available to us today.
We also encourage you to check out our Faith and Liberty Bible—a custom historical application study Bible that offers 813 articles and quotations from people across American history who have drawn on the Bible in their work and writings. Each piece is annotated and reviewed by a team of scholars of American history, law, and religion (many of whom are participating in our Speakers Bureau) and is designed to guide you in uncovering new depths to history as you explore the significant influence of the Bible on the American experience.
