You pull into the driveway, turn off the engine, and sit there—frozen. You don’t want to move.

You dread opening the mailbox to see more bills. You hate the thought of going inside and seeing your leaky fridge you can’t afford to fix. You don’t want to look at the empty cupboards, your pet you can’t afford to take to the vet, the carpet you keep meaning to replace, the sunken mattress you battle with every night.

You can hear the blood pounding in your ears as you open the car door and meander inside. The constant anxiety has become your new normal, and you’re not sure how much more you can take.

When I feel anxious about all the things I can’t afford to fix, buy, or do, it’s easy for me to feel this way, too. I’m overwhelmed by the impossibility of the tasks before me, and I can’t live up to my expectations.

Little by little, God has been showing me how to rely on him during these times of anxiety. He reminds me that it’s okay not to have everything together. And he shows me that he’s got my back—even when it feels like everything is crumbling around me.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the things you can’t afford, I encourage you to take a few moments right now to settle your heart and mind.

Take a few deep breaths and ask God to give you peace even though it might feel impossible right now. And then read these 5 verses of hope and comfort with me:

God will carry your burdens.

Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light. — Matthew 11:28-30, GNTD

God will give you peace.

Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid. — John 14:27, GNTD

God will give you what you need.

And with all his abundant wealth through Christ Jesus, my God will supply all your needs. — Philippians 4:19, GNTD

God will not let you be defeated.

Leave your troubles with the Lord,
    and he will defend you
he never lets honest people be defeated.Psalm 55:22, GNTD

God will take care of you.

Look at the crows: they don’t plant seeds or gather a harvest; they don’t have storage rooms or barns; God feeds them! You are worth so much more than birds! It is God who clothes the wild grass—grass that is here today and gone tomorrow, burned up in the oven. Won’t he be all the more sure to clothe you? — Luke 12:24, 28, GNTD
