You know the feeling.
It starts in the pit of your stomach, but soon it’s a deafening roar in your ears. Before you know it, your jaw is clenched and your brow is furrowed. You might start spitting fiery words, or you might feel hot tears cascade down your cheeks.
Anger is an emotion we’ve all experienced—and witnessed in action.
It’s common to point to road rage, toddler temper tantrums, or viral videos of public meltdowns as examples of anger. But the Bible teaches us that anger can also be more subtle, and more dangerous.
We’re warned that anger only leads to trouble (Psalm 37:8). And anger is listed among the sins that will prevent people from entering the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21).
So, what do you do when you’re feeling angry?
First, it’s important to understand that the Bible does not teach that all anger is sinful. Throughout Scripture, there are examples of God’s righteous anger against sin and the wicked (see Nahum 1:2-10). We also see Jesus express righteous anger. He rebuked his disciples when they tried to stop little children from receiving his blessing (Mark 10:14). He also drove moneychangers out of the temple, a place that should have been wholly devoted to worship (Matthew 21:12-13). When we witness sin and injustice that goes against God’s law, we can also experience this righteous anger.
However, like our other emotions, we experience anger in the context of our sinful hearts and a broken world. Too often, our anger is rooted in selfishness or hatred. And, left unchecked, it can quickly destroy our relationships with family, friends, and neighbors.
When you’re feeling angry, here are six verses to consider as you seek to avoid sin and pursue God’s wisdom.
Anger goes against God’s righteous purpose for our lives.
Remember this, my dear friends! Everyone must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry. Human anger does not achieve God’s righteous purpose.
James 1:19-20 GNT
Anger can have eternal consequences.
“You have heard that people were told in the past, ‘Do not commit murder; anyone who does will be brought to trial.’ But now I tell you: if you are angry with your brother you will be brought to trial, if you call your brother ‘You good-for-nothing!’ you will be brought before the Council, and if you call your brother a worthless fool you will be in danger of going to the fire of hell.”
Matthew 5:21-22 GNT
Anger can become a foothold for sin in your life.
If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you into sin, and do not stay angry all day. Don’t give the Devil a chance.
Ephesians 4:26-27 GNT
Uncontrolled anger is a sign of foolishness.
Stupid people express their anger openly, but sensible people are patient and hold it back.
Proverbs 29:11 GNT
Becoming friends with people who cannot control their anger can be dangerous.
Don’t make friends with people who have hot, violent tempers.
Proverbs 22:24 GNT
We should always seek to follow God’s example, treating others with love and mercy instead of anger.
The LORD is merciful and loving,
slow to become angry and full of constant love.Psalm 103:8 GNT
