When my aunt was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer seven years ago, we were all plunged into panic, fear, anxiety and sadness. She was young—only 49.
Her illness followed the typical course of many patients with her disease: surgery, chemo, radiation, more chemo and more radiation. Eventually, the treatments stopped working and cancer claimed her life just 1.5 years after her diagnosis.
As I walked with my aunt during her journey of illness, I learned some incredible things. I learned what it means to have faith. No matter how bad the news, my aunt Theresa never waivered in her belief that the Lord would take care of her.
I also learned the meaning of true Christian hope: At a time when Theresa was losing everything—her health, her life as she knew it—she was gaining a true sense of God’s deep, abiding love for her.
