In this episode of our new video series, “Liana’s Favorite Books,” American Bible Society’s beloved librarian, Dr. Liana Lupas, takes you on a tour of the very first Bible printed in America: a 1663 Bible for the Algonquin people.

This historic translation was also the first Bible printed outside of Europe, making it one of the most valuable books in American Bible Society’s library. It was translated by Rev. John Eliot, who came to the American colonies from England in 1631. He was assisted in translating the Bible by Job Nesutan, an Algonquin Christian. Eliot also helped establish four schools for the Algonquin people, ensuring that everyone in the community would be able to read God’s Word in their heart language.

We hope you enjoy this Bible adventure with Dr. Lupas:
