A little girl, unable able to sleep, tip-toes into her parents’ room. In the dark of dawn, she digs for a toe under the blanket and tugs. “Mommy! Is it time for presents?!”
Like a child awaiting Christmas morning, we, too, get excited in anticipation of things to come. Events. Celebrations. Vacations. The weekend. A delicious meal.
Sometimes, the thing that thrills us can consume our thoughts. So focused, we barely sleep. Our mind feverishly plans and prepares and imagines and predicts. We count down days, hours, minutes, eagerly awaiting what’s in store.
Sound familiar? It does for the writer of Psalm 84—except
he longs for something of eternal value:
“How I love your Temple, Lord Almighty! How I want to be there! I long to be in the Lord’s Temple. With my whole being I sing for joy to the living God.”
Psalm 84:1-2
Advent offers a season of preparation in the weeks leading up to Christmas to read and reflect on the birth of Jesus. A period to ponder the future coming of the Lord. A time to celebrate God’s plan of salvation. An opportunity to meditate on what matters most.
When you seek to truly understand God’s love and purpose for you, you’ll find your heart growing fonder for him.
