American Bible Society commemorates the late President James “Jimmy” Earl Carter Jr. for his efforts and contributions toward Bible translation and printing. During his presidency, he played a key role in making possible the eventual creation of the Amity Printing Company (APC), which is now one of the largest bases for Bible printing in the world.

“As I reflect on the life of the late Jimmy Carter, I can’t help but recognize and honor him for his willingness and boldness in sharing his Christian faith,” said Dr. Jennifer Holloran, president and CEO of American Bible Society. “That faith has inspired many and helped to prompt the creation of the Amity Printing Company decades ago, which has since been pivotal in providing Bible access to individuals across the globe so they can engage with the Word of God.”

In 1979, President Carter shared his faith with Deng Xiaoping, the former paramount leader of the People’s Republic of China, also urging him to allow Bible printing to take place within the country. The request was granted shortly after their meeting. Amity Printing Company (APC) was then created in 1986 as a partnership between Amity Foundation and the United Bible Societies to support Christians in China and now plays a critical role in providing Bible access to people across Asia and the world.

We thank God for the faithful legacy of people like President Carter, whose lifelong love for God’s Word continues to bless people today!
