Growing up in poverty in a high-crime area of the Dominican Republic, Maikel* has not had an easy life.
“I didn’t know what we were going to eat the next day,” he recalls. “I thought I was going to die. That was hard.” For people living in similar circumstances, there is often little to no access to Bibles, or the hope found in the message of Jesus.
Last year, through the local Bible Society’s End-to-End outreach, Maikel had the opportunity to watch the JESUS Film for the first time. It touched his heart deeply — especially seeing Jesus betrayed and suffering for the sins of the world.
Afterward, Maikel began attending an audio Bible listening group. Listening to Scripture in his heart language helped him understand the message of the cross even more. “It helps me speak the truth more by seeing how the whole group gets involved with the Bible,” he shares. Maikel also received a printed Bible of his own that he can read daily.
Putting it simply, Maikel shares, “We are not good. But this Bible is going to fix my life. Reading the Bible motivates me to do good. So far, it has helped me change my character.”
