Honor the father figures in your life by reflecting on
fathers in the Bible. From human fathers to our Heavenly Father, here are a few
New Testament passages focusing on fatherly love, patience, wisdom and faith.
Joseph, the Earthly
Father of Jesus
“This was how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. His
mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they were married, she found out
that she was going to have a baby by the Holy Spirit. Joseph was a man who
always did what was right, but he did not want to disgrace Mary publicly; so he
made plans to break the engagement privately. While he was thinking about this,
an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, descendant
of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit
that she has conceived. She will have a son, and you will name him
Jesus–because he will save his people from their sins.’ … So when Joseph woke up, he married
Mary, as the angel of the Lord had told him to.” Matthew 1.18 (GNTD)
Father of the Prodigal
Son
“‘He was still a long way from home when his father saw him;
his heart was filled with pity, and he ran, threw his arms around his son, and
kissed him. “Father,” the son said, “I have sinned against God and against you.
I am no longer fit to be called your son.” But the father called to his
servants. “Hurry!” he said. “Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring
on his finger and shoes on his feet. Then go and get the prize calf and kill
it, and let us celebrate with a feast! For this son of mine was dead, but now
he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.”’ And so the feasting
began.” Luke 15.20 (GNTD)
Our Heavenly Father
“[Jesus] looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has
come. Give glory to your Son, so that the Son may give glory to you. For you
gave him authority over all people, so that he might give eternal life to all
those you gave him. And eternal life means to know you, the only true God, and
to know Jesus Christ, whom you sent. I have shown your glory on earth; I have
finished the work you gave me to do. Father! Give me glory in your presence
now, the same glory I had with you before the world was made.’” John 17.1 (GNTD)
