After scanning your calendar—and counting the number of days remaining in the month—you groan, close your bank statement and slam the lid of your laptop. How have I already outspent last month? You think to yourself. I still have a week-and-a-half to go and I’m already over budget. Great.

As a familiar pit forms in your stomach, you begin to create a plan for the final stretch of the month, working tirelessly to save money. But no matter how you crunch the numbers, your spending still exceeds your income. And your stress begins to build.

Have you been in this position before? Budgeting, crunching numbers, trying to cut corners—the process often feels exhausting. And when those numbers don’t add up, the process often feels stressful and unmanageable.

Maybe you’re raising three kids on your own and just can’t seem to find the financial flexibility you need. Maybe you’re taking courses toward a college degree but can barely pay for your tuition, let alone your daily expenses. Maybe you’re overwhelmed with debt and can’t seem to find a way out.

Regardless of your situation, you’re stressed. And you’re tired of your money—or lack of money—controlling you. Where can you turn?

You can start by meditating on the hope, peace and perseverance found in Scripture. These five Bible verses will get you started:

  1. Deuteronomy 31:8 (GNTD)
The Lord himself will lead you and be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you, so do not lose courage or be afraid.
  2. Proverbs 3:5-6 (GNTD)
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.
  3. Philippians 4:6-7 (GNTD)
Don’t worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God’s peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.
  4. Isaiah 41:13 (GNTD)
I am the Lord your God; I strengthen you and tell you, “Do not be afraid; I will help you.”
  5. Philippians 4:19 (GNTD)
And with all his abundant wealth through Christ Jesus, my God will supply all your needs.
