Are you a to-do list person?
I know I am. Sometimes I add items to my lists just so I can cross them off. I’ll even jot a note to take out the trash even though it’s already out on the curb. In these moments, list-making feels good. It gives me a sense of control.
But sometimes lists can’t match the chaos of life. Maybe you write a pros and cons list to consider a job offer, but you still can’t decide. Or you compose a thorough list of every item you need for a big event—a wedding, a baby shower—but the day doesn’t go as planned. Or maybe you read and re-read house listings, but you just can’t seem to find the right place for your new home.
When you can’t make sense out of life, where do you turn?
When I feel overwhelmed by life, I meditate on these simple words: Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10, KJV). As I reflect on these words, my forehead slowly unwrinkles, and my jaw unclenches. Then I know that God’s peace has filled me. I know God is right there with me. He is in control. He makes sense of things when lists aren’t enough.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by lists and life today, I invite you to open your Bible and meditate on God’s promises of comfort and peace.
These four verses will help get you started:
John 10:10 (GNT)
The thief comes only in order to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come in order that you might have life—life in all its fullness.
Philippians 4:19 (GNT)
And with all his abundant wealth through Christ Jesus, my God will supply all your needs.
Psalm 46:10a (CEV)
Our God says, “Calm down, and learn that I am God!”
Isaiah 41:10 (GNT)
Do not be afraid—I am with you! I am your God—let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you.
