You’re busily going throughout your day when you feel it coming on: a tickle in the back of your throat, a wave of nausea, the kind of lethargy only sickness gives.

You try to ignore the feeling, telling yourself you have too much to do today. This is the worst of all possible days to slow down. So you brew yourself some tea, down a fistful of multivitamins, and push on. You just don’t have time to be sick.

At the end of the day, when you finally get through your front door and sink into the couch cushions, you know you’ve pushed too hard. But how can you rest when you still have so much left to do today? Perhaps you have a family to cook for, paperwork you need to finish, chores that need to be done.

It’s easy to feel stressed and frustrated when sickness steals your productivity. But, sometimes, it takes a bout of illness to remind us that we have limits—and to show us how to slow down and let ourselves rest.

If you’re struggling with an illness today—whether it’s the flu or a chronic illness—take a few moments to rest in the comfort found in God’s Word. Even if you’re resting reluctantly, the Bible can show you how to begin to rest in the knowledge of God’s goodness. Here are 4 verses to get you started:

1.     Psalm 73:25-26 (GNTD)

What else do I have in heaven but you?

Since I have you, what else could I want on earth?

My mind and my body may grow weak,

    but God is my strength;

he is all I ever need.

2.     Romans 8:28 (GNTD)

We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him, those whom he has called according to his purpose.

3.     Philippians 4:19 (GNTD)

And with all his abundant wealth through Christ Jesus, my God will supply all your needs.

4.     Psalm 4:6-8 (CEV)

There are some who ask,

“Who will be good to us?”

    Let your kindness, Lord,

    shine brightly on us.

You brought me more happiness

    than a rich harvest

    of grain and grapes.

I can lie down

    and sleep soundly

    because you, Lord,

    will keep me safe.
