The knot in your stomach tightens as you pull another bill from the mailbox—a bill you fear you won’t be able to pay.

The pain in your jaw aches as you plug the numbers into your budgeting spreadsheet—and, yet again, you come up short.

The rocks in your throat as you log into your bank account—and see the balance hovering dangerously close to zero.

You remind yourself that money can’t buy happiness. But it sure feels like lack of money destroys it. You might be left wondering, Does God even care about me? If God is watching over me, why do I have to skip lunch just to pay my rent?

If you’re stressed about low funds today, there is hope. God understands your needs, and he wants to bring you security and joy (James 1:17, Matthew 6:25-34). Fight financial anxiety by reflecting on these Proverbs about money.

Money alone won’t give you the security you crave.

Trust in your wealth,
and you will be a failure,
    but God’s people will prosper
like healthy plants. — Proverbs 11:28 (CEV)

Give up trying so hard
to get rich. — Proverbs 23:4 (CEV)

Don’t worry about keeping up with the Joneses.

Some who have nothing
    may pretend to be rich,
    and some who have everything
may pretend to be poor. — Proverbs 13:7 (CEV)

Too much money can be a bad thing, too.

There are two things, Lord,
I want you to do for me
    before I die:
Make me absolutely honest
and don’t let me be too poor
    or too rich.
Give me just what I need.
If I have too much to eat,
    I might forget about you;
if I don’t have enough,
    I might steal
and disgrace your name. — Proverbs 30:7-9 (CEV)

Wisdom will make you richer than money.

God blesses everyone
who has wisdom
    and common sense.
Wisdom is worth more
    than silver;
    it makes you much richer
than gold. — Proverbs 3:13-14 (CEV)

God will guide you and take care of you.

With all your heart
you must trust the Lord
    and not your own judgment.
Always let him lead you,
and he will clear the road
for you to follow. — Proverbs 3:5-6 (CEV)
