Let’s face it: superheroes are great entertainment. But are
they just that—entertainment that we can walk away from without any “higher”
significance or purpose?
In the upcoming movie The
Amazing Spider-Man 2
, Peter Parker isn’t exactly the spitting image of John
the Baptist (that Spidey suit definitely isn’t made of camel hair) or Moses
(Peter’s life changes from a spider bite, not a burning bush). But the story of
Spider-man does present some of the same values that show up throughout the
Bible, including responsibility, sacrifice and caring for the “least of these.”
Here are a few questions to get you thinking (and talking!) about
these themes when you watch the movie:
- Peter’s uncle said that with great power comes great
responsibility. What power do you have that you could use for good? - Max Dillon could have become a hero or a villain. What
choices can you make that will affect who you become? - What’s an example of a sacrificial act by Spider-Man in
this movie? Has anyone sacrificed for you? If so, who? - Gwen Stacey’s graduation speech reminded us to make our
lives count. Who are people you know that made their lives count? How can you
make a difference?
