Let’s face it: superheroes are great entertainment. But are
they just that—entertainment that we can walk away from without any “higher”
significance or purpose?

In the upcoming movie The
Amazing Spider-Man 2
, Peter Parker isn’t exactly the spitting image of John
the Baptist (that Spidey suit definitely isn’t made of camel hair) or Moses
(Peter’s life changes from a spider bite, not a burning bush). But the story of
Spider-man does present some of the same values that show up throughout the
Bible, including responsibility, sacrifice and caring for the “least of these.”

Here are a few questions to get you thinking (and talking!) about
these themes when you watch the movie:

  1. Peter’s uncle said that with great power comes great
responsibility. What power do you have that you could use for good?
  2. Max Dillon could have become a hero or a villain. What
choices can you make that will affect who you become?
  3. What’s an example of a sacrificial act by Spider-Man in
this movie? Has anyone sacrificed for you? If so, who?
  4. Gwen Stacey’s graduation speech reminded us to make our
lives count. Who are people you know that made their lives count? How can you
    make a difference?
