In 1994, tensions arising from a battle for political power in Rwanda led to one of the most horrific events in human history. In what became known as the Rwandan genocide, more than 800,000 Tutsis and Hutu moderates were massacred by Hutu extremists in just over 100 days. Messages of hate and vengeance spread in the streets and across radio waves, leading to violence, rape, and murder in a battle for dominance.
Decades later, Rwandan survivors are still suffering from the trauma that took place during those 100 days. Orphans, widows, and refugees live in poverty. They struggle with loneliness and displacement. An HIV and AIDS pandemics continue to plague the nation.
But they are not alone or forgotten.
“The Lord is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope.”
—Psalm 34:18
Bible-Based Trauma Healing Fills the Radio Waves
Survivors of the genocide remember the hateful messages that were once blasted over Rwanda’s radio waves. But now, a different message is coming through—one that’s broadcasting the healing power of God’s Word.
Bible Society of Rwanda has partnered with American Bible Society to launch Bible-based trauma healing over the radio. The thirteen-episode ministry program airs on four radio stations in Kinyarwanda, Rwanda’s official language. It covers topics including suffering, grief, and forgiveness. Discussions, teachings, and songs based on Scripture provide listeners with biblical truths to help them heal from their trauma.
As a result, God’s message of hope is making its way into hearts all over Rwanda. In 2017, more than 2 million people listened to the Bible-based trauma healing radio program. Approximately 1,800 people called in to speak with trained facilitators, and 240 people participated in healing groups.
A woman who had been raped during the genocide tells how Bible-based trauma healing helped her with forgiveness. “I managed to share what happened with my husband … I am free and we are harmoniously living very well as a family.”
Let’s Pray Together:
God, thank you for using Bible-based trauma healing to restore lives in Rwanda. Please provide the resources needed to continue growing this ministry and reach all who are suffering. Please incline the ears of those who need to hear your voice, that they might find comfort in your arms of love.
