When Jesus speaks, its powerful! The Bible records moments when his words healed the sick, raised the dead, and set people free. And his words are still powerful today.
But what if you couldn’t read Jesus’s words? For many people in Mozambique, this is a reality. More than 60 percent of the total population cannot read. In this predominantly oral culture, the best method for sharing the Bible’s messages of hope is by audio recordings.
Listening to the Words of Jesus
To bless Mozambicans with the life-changing messages of the Bible, Faith Comes By Hearing and Bible Society in Mozambique have partnered to launch a Bible listening program.
Organized by local churches, people gather in small groups. Through a radio-like device called a Proclaimer, participants listen to Scriptures in their native language. Then, they discuss what they heard and are given an opportunity to commit their lives to Christ.
But Audio Scriptures aren’t just being shared in churches. Proclaimers are also bringing the Good News of Jesus to hospitals, prisons, and orphanages.
Bizimungu was imprisoned for stealing. From prison he planned to take revenge on the person who reported him to authorities. Then he heard the gospel. As Bizmungu attended a listening group in prison, his heart was transformed. “The stories motivated me to continue with the listening group, and I found that it was very powerful to ask for pardon and forgiveness.” When Bizimungu left prison, he continued in a listening group at his uncle’s church.
God’s Word is spreading across Mozambique thanks to Audio Scriptures. In 2018, more than 51,000 people have participated in listening groups and over 2,600 people have given their life to Jesus. Let’s pray for God’s Word to continue to impact the lives of Mozambicans!
Let’s Pray Together
Father, thank you for creative innovations to share your Word with people all around the world. We pray that as people in Mozambique hear your Word, their hearts would be filled with hope. We pray others like Bizmungu would give their lives to Jesus.
