Our nation’s Veterans are strong and courageous. But nothing can prepare you for the trauma of losing a limb, watching a friend die, or killing an enemy.
Imagine the young Veteran who recently returned from years of service in Afghanistan. She feels alienated from her colleagues at her new desk job, knowing they can’t possibly understand what she endured in combat.
Think of the retired grandfather—watching the evening news in his reclining chair, his U.S. Marines hat sitting proudly on his head—who struggles to tell his family about the terror he felt in Vietnam.
Our Veterans may feel ashamed of their suffering—convinced their intense training should have prepared them for the horrors of war.
At American Bible Society, we share God’s Word with Veterans suffering from the hidden wounds of war. Thanks to our generous partners, we are able to provide
free Bible resources to Veterans across the country.
One Veteran used to struggle with despair every day. But when he received a Bible from American Bible Society, he says, “My attitude about life in general improved. I’m reading the Bible almost daily now. I feel more alive!”
Another Veterans shares: “I’ve been suffering for over 45 years. Finally, God’s Word has opened my eyes to a new life!”
Your prayers matter. Pray with us for our nation’s Veterans.
Veterans need more than free Bible resources. They need the support of people praying for God’s Word to heal battle wounds of the soul and mind.
Take some time to pray through Psalm 91 with us this Veterans Day as you remember the Veterans in your life and across our nation.
Lord, thank you for the brave men and women who have served our country. Keep our Veterans in your care. Show them that you are their protector when they feel vulnerable and exposed to the memories of war. Embolden them to tell you their stories of heartache. Surround them with people who love them and remind them that their service matters. Thank you for offering all of us the promise of your everlasting love. Amen.
Whoever goes to the Lord for safety,
whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty,
can say to him,
“You are my defender and protector.
You are my God; in you I trust.”
He will keep you safe from all hidden dangers
and from all deadly diseases.
He will cover you with his wings;
you will be safe in his care;
his faithfulness will protect and defend you.
You need not fear any dangers at night
or sudden attacks during the day
or the plagues that strike in the dark
or the evils that kill in daylight.
A thousand may fall dead beside you,
ten thousand all around you,
but you will not be harmed.
You will look and see
how the wicked are punished.You have made the Lord your defender,
the Most High your protector,
and so no disaster will strike you,
no violence will come near your home.
God will put his angels in charge of you
to protect you wherever you go.
They will hold you up with their hands
to keep you from hurting your feet on the stones.
You will trample down lions and snakes,
fierce lions and poisonous snakes.God says, “I will save those who love me
and will protect those who acknowledge me as Lord.
When they call to me, I will answer them;
when they are in trouble, I will be with them.
I will rescue them and honor them.
I will reward them with long life;
I will save them.”
