Samuel* grew up helping his father run the family’s large rubber tree farm in Liberia, a country where over 64 percent of the population lives in poverty. When Samuel was old enough, he decided to move to the city with some friends who wanted to “live large” and party frequently. Samuel asked his father for the money he needed for the move.

Unfortunately, Samuel’s money didn’t last long, and he frequently found himself requesting more from his father.

When his father eventually refused to financially support him further, Samuel became angry. “I hit my father, and our relationship became sour,” he explains. Afterward, Samuel’s friends suggested that he steal from his father, which he did several times.

One day, when Samuel came back to the village to steal more money, he noticed a group of young people gathering to listen to an audio Bible. He decided to join the group in an effort to hide from his father. The lesson that day happened to be from Luke 15, the story of the prodigal son.

As he listened, Samuel recalls: “I began to weep in regret for all I had done to my father.” He confessed his transgressions to the pastor and to his father. Most importantly, he confessed his sins to Jesus, accepting Him as his Savior.

After listening to the audio Bible and devoting his life to Christ, Samuel received a Bible of his own in his heart language. Now, Samuel says, “My life has changed for the good, and I am helping my father even more than before.”
