Any biography of Eugene A. Nida is cause for celebration. Now one of the most thorough will reach a much wider audience. Let the Words Be Written: The Lasting Influence of Eugene A. Nida (Society of Biblical Literature, 2004) by Dr. Philip C. Stine is available in paperback. A Chinese translation, by
Dr. Simon Wong, was published in 2006.
Nida’s ideas on translation, including his “dynamic equivalence” theory, continues to have a profound influence on how we think about translating the Bible today. He actively worked with translation projects across the world, and his theories shaped the American Bible Society’s Good News Bible (New Testament, 1966; Old Testament, 1976) and the Contemporary English Bible (1995). Today, Eugene A. Nida lives in Belgium, retired but active at the age of 92.
