Master Sergeant Scott Griffith* has bravely served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 19 years. As he prepared for his very first deployment, the base Chaplain offered him a small, camouflage-covered Bible. Scott took the Bible, thinking, “I need to be reading the Word and trying to build my relationship with God because He’s going to get me through this.”
That Bible — provided by our caring friends — gave Scott a constant source of peace, comfort, and encouragement in even the most difficult battles and deepest sorrows. One of those times took place in Afghanistan.
A group of young Marines that Scott had served with had been out on patrol. Back on the base, Scott suddenly heard sirens and commotion. When he went to investigate, he witnessed rescue helicopters landing so fast that they slid to a stop. The Marines had been ambushed in the mountains. The helicopters were bringing in the most critically injured and then rushing back out for more.
“Most of that company didn’t make it,” Scott shares. “They were my brothers in arms . . . and a lot of them paid the ultimate price.”
Over the years, serving on multiple deployments in some very dangerous regions, Scott carried that Bible with him. Whether running for cover in the dark of night, as mortars dropped from the sky, or thinking about his wife and children thousands of miles away, the one constant he could rely on was God’s Word, always within arm’s reach.
Thank you to our generous partners for continuing to help provide Bibles for the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the life and liberty we enjoy here at home!
